Well, the road will be long for competing in Thomson High School athletic and scholastic competitions with the reclassification of Georgia high schools.
On Tuesday afternoon, THS found out that it had been placed in Class AAAA-Region 7. Other teams in the region are Burke County (47 miles away), Liberty County (176 miles away), New Hampstead (147 miles away), Wayne County (147 miles away) and Windsor Forest (162 miles away.)
Milan Turner, THS head football coach and athletic director, said there was so much talk of where THS would end up and who would be in the region in AAAA.
“We did the math of the region we are in and the average one-way trip is 137 miles,” said Turner. “The isolation rule says that if that distance averages 100 miles or more, we could have to appeal to play up in classification.”
If Thomson climbed the ladder to AAAAA, Turner said that would put the school in the region with Northside, Warner Robins, Columbia schools and so on.
