• Study reports no need to audit hotels
By Linda Green

The hotels and motels in McDuffie County are paying the appropriate sales tax to the county’s collections.
That was the result of an analysis of hotel-motel returns and remittances made to McDuffie County from August 2010 to July 2013.
At the invitation of the McDuffie County Board of Commissioner,, the Atlanta-based Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) and the Resource Professional Group examined the sales tax remittances of the lodging providers in the county.
The report was given as part of a two-part commission meeting Wednesday.
In August, tourism director Elizabeth Vance suggested that an audit of hotels and motels be done. She reported at that time that comparative monthly tax revenue data over the last 30 months from a travel research company showed a financial discrepancy of 20-25 percent in sales tax remittance to the county.
