• Harlem police chase ends in Augusta
By Linda Green

A traffic stop turned into a vehicle pursuit and a foot chase for the Harlem Department of Public Safety Monday night.
Following an attempt to stop an SUV for a tag violation at North Louisville Street in Harlem, the driver, Jose Raymond Velazquez, 42, of Johnston, S.C. led law enforcement on a chase through Harlem and Grovetown. Officers from Grovetown and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the pursuit.
According to Harlem Police Chief Gary Jones, Velazquez drove north from the Pumpkin Center and made a right onto Wrightsboro Road and then into Grovetown. He said that after entering Columbia County, the driver sped east onto Gordon Highway and was stopped at the Mt. Zion Apartments in Barton Village in Augusta.
