• Firefighters fight same fire three times Sunday
By Linda Green

A brush fire of unknown origins sent the county fire department to the area between the Thomson Bypass and Old Washington Road three times on Sunday.
Thirteen firefighters and three engines from McDuffie County Fire Rescue were dispatched to a large grass and brush fire beginning at the Verizon tower off Old Washington Road at noon. The advancing fire had the firefighters positioned at Old Washington Road, the Bypass and Dallas Drive.
One group of firefighters concentrated on the leading edge of the burning fire that was racing toward the Washington Place Apartments while another focused on a brush fire in the roadway at the By-Pass. Georgia Forestry was called to plow a break around the fire.
