Youngsters received free school supplies through the efforts of area groups at Pitts Street Park Saturday.
There was also fun, games and food at the “On the Road to Success Back to School Bash.”
The event was hosted by Willie “Coolie” Myrick and sponsors and volunteers, said Valencia Myrick, Coolie’s wife.
Valencia says Myrick, who for the last three years has been in the McDuffie County Jail on drug charges, is paying his debt to society and trying to better life for young people.
“He works to give back to the community and helping kids is his passion,” said Myrick, who said Willie grew up in the Pitts Street neighborhood.
“This is the fifth year we have held this event and we look forward to it each year,” she said.
