McDuffie County Fire Service Cadets recently took the boot to help burn victims.
On June 27 and 28, 13 members of the cadet group collected $819 from shoppers at the Thomson Wal-Mart, said Lt. James Lewis, MCFR public education officer who oversees the cadet program.
Bobbie Jo Gainey, director of development for the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation, said the foundation was thankful for the cadets’ efforts.
She said the money will be used for assistance to families of victims being treated at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.
“As long as the person is a patient at the center, families can come stay free of charge at the Jeffrey Vaden Chavis House,” she said. “They get a hot meal every day and get to be close to the family member. We believe that is powerful medicine to have family close by.”
