After taking care of business by winning first place in Midget Boys 12-under District Championship, the Thomson-McDuffie All-Stars baseball team moved on to the state competition Thursday at Sweetwater Park.
The McDuffie County team handed Colquitt County a 7-6 loss and advanced to play Summerville at 4 p.m.
“We got ahead of them early,” said Charles Johnson, co-head coach for the McDuffie County team. “Since we had to play two games, we used a lot of pitchers. We buckled down and came back for the win.”
Heavy rains forced cancellation of Wednesday’s action, but the sun came out early in the day Thursday for the start of the tourney.
The Thomson team was anxious to get started against Colquitt County Thursday, as the boys had success in the district tourney in Effingham County two weeks earlier. The local team defeated Burke County 5-2 to capture the trophy. This, after losing 4-2 in an earlier game against a Burke County squad.
