Bank to host fundraiser for service members
By Jim Wallace, Correspondent

An upcoming cake sale will benefit those who serve our country.
Queensborough National Bank & Trust on West Hill Street will host the event on Fri., June 28, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Ralph Starling, of Queensborough, said the effort will raise money for recreation events for United States Navy sailors and their families.
Starling is asking for 100 cakes to be baked for the event that it is hoped will raise nearly $2,000.
Starling said sailors will be at the event, including Command Master Chief Larry Howard, who was born and raised in Thomson, and CTIC Richard Norman, Navy chief, of Thomson. Both are stationed at Navy Information Operations Command at Fort Gordon, said Starling, who has been coordinating the event with Norman.
Howard enlisted in 1984, and Norman enlisted in 2002. Both men have seen many assignments, including numerous submarine deployments and both have received multiple commendations for their service.
Lt. Gen. DeWayne Patrick, (Ret.) is scheduled to visit the fundraiser and talk with and thank the sailors.
People are invited to purchase a cake and thank the sailors for their service.
Starling said there are approximately 1,400 Navy personnel stationed at Fort Gordon.
According to Norman, with current day budgeting, the Navy Command gets minimal funding to host Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) events. Sailors undertake fundraising efforts throughout the CSRA to help raise money.
Some of the events the money funds include the Annual Navy Birthday Ball each November, picnics and other events that allow sailors to enjoy time with family and fellow sailors.
Anyone who will volunteer to bake a cake may contact Startling at (706) 799-4617. Starling said checks should be made payable to Navy Information Operations Command, Georgia.
