The roots of American music took center stage Friday night as citizens filled a tent behind the McDuffie Museum to open a six-week exhibit exploring culture and music of today.
New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, a Smithsonian traveling exhibit, opened to fanfare, ceremony and celebration of local musicians.
“It is exciting when you can highlight local folk in an exhibit,” said County Commission Chairman Charlie Newton in a welcoming moment to the crowd.
The New Harmonies exhibit, in town from March 29 through May 11, is the second Smithsonian showcase in McDuffie County. “I can feel the excitement around this one,” Newton said. “People are talking about it because it allows us to celebrate some of McDuffie’s finest,” he said.
