• Board holds final public hearing on school zones changes
By Jim Wallace, Correspondent

At a hearing Tuesday, the McDuffie County Board of Education met to finalize a way to address the demographic and racial makeup of the school system.
In a 20-minute meeting, the board held the third – and final – hearing on the details of the Voting Rights Act and other parts of the Civil Rights Bill that applied to our schools.
Bob Knox Jr., the school system’s attorney, said that a lawsuit was filed in the early 70s and that suit has been open and pending since that time.
“In essence, it brought all the school systems into court to be sure that there was court-monitored progress with the way that we desegregated our schools to be sure that integration took place as far as our school systems are concerned,” said Knox.
