Tuesday morning the McDuffie County School Board held the first of three public hearings to discuss the proposed changes to the Dearing and Thomson school attendance zones.
Superintendent Jim LeBrun said the hearing was to share information about data assembled by the United States Department of Justice and provide details about the department’s recommendations.
The superintendent called on Bob Knox Jr., the school board’s attorney, to provide background information on why the changes are being made.
Knox explained the first lawsuit that involved the Voting Rights Act and other parts of the Civil Rights bill that applied to the local board of education had to do generally with the way board members are elected and also the demographic and racial makeup of the school system so there was a “complete integration of our system from a racial standpoint” and that the details of the Civil Rights Act were followed.
