In late February, Marine Sgt. Major Harrison L. Tanksley returned to California after serving a year in Afghanistan as the top enlisted leader.
Tanksley is a 1981 Thomson graduate who grew up playing recreation league football and baseball. He later played baseball for THS, then joined the Marine Corps after graduating from high school.
A 30-plus year veteran of the Marine Corps, he served as the sergeant major for the Regional Southwest Command while deployed in Afghanistan.
That meant he was the senior enlisted advisor to the commanding general. He advised on all enlisted issues in Afghanistan for 12 months. The McDuffie Progress had a chance to speak with Tanksley while he was still deployed in Afghanistan near the end of his tour.
“The challenge that I face now is ensuring that the Marines, sailors, soldiers, airmen and coalition partners remain engaged on the mission at hand, making sure that we do not forget that we are in combat,” Tanksley said.
