Briarwood Academy’s Lady Bucs have a first-found bye in the region tournament and an automatic bid for the state tournament following Friday night’s 63-40 win over Monsignor Donovan.
Following the game, the two coaches flipped a coin to see who would go into the region tournament, which will be hosted by Gatewood Schools, seeded number two. Briarwood won. The region tournament begins Tuesday, however the Lady Bucs will not take the court until Thursday. The region championship will be Friday.
Winning that coin toss gives the Lady Bucs’ two key scorers — Malia Kency and Tiffany Pate — time to heal. Briarwood Coach Keith Johnson said Kency is nursing a sore back, which she placed ice on immediately following Friday’s game. He also said Pate is having to contend with a sprained ankle.
