• National Guard unit going to Afghanistan

A ceremony will honor the local National Guard battery that will deploy overseas later this year.
The l-214th Field Artillery, Granite Battalion will conduct base defense operations in Afghanistan beginning this spring through the spring of next year, according to Lt. Col David Casey, commander of the battalion.
Their deployment is in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Tish Chase, director for the Thomson-McDuffie Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber is organizing the ceremony which will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 8 at the Brickyard on Main Street.
The public is welcome and encouraged to honor the soldiers as they prepare to leave.
