• Derry picked chairman of school board

The McDuffie County School Board elected Greg Derry, who represents Super District 2, as the board chairman Tuesday morning during it’s work session meeting.
Derry recently completed a four-year term as the board member representing District 5. However, he sought election to the Super District 2 seat and defeated incumbent Bob Smith, a former Thomson High School principal.
A motion by Dorothy Hart nominated Derry. The board voted 6-0 to approve Derry as board president. Boardmember Dexter Lovins abstained from voting. The board also selected a vice chairman with a 7-0 vote to affirm Ella Samuels, who is elected to represent District 3. Samuels was nominated by Bea Hart-Moss.
