The Monday meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Thomson was not a usual one.
The Club, in a service that had laughter, an Elvis impersonator and a celebratory meal, lifted a member to man of the year status.
For distinguishing himself by exceptional and commendable participation in club activities throughout the year, Tom Smalley received a standing ovation as he was named “Kiwanian of the Year.”
Tommy Phelps, of First Citizens Bank, announced Smalley, comptroller for McDuffie County Schools, during an awards luncheon at the Depot.
“He has blessed us in the club and in our school system,” Phelps said, as he presented Smalley with two plaques.
