Berma Morris Davenport, 100, of Fayetteville, N.C., died peacefully at home on Jan. 8, 2013.
Born Nov. 1, 1912 in Thomson, Ga. the eldest daughter of the late Obie Farris Morris and Luna Kate Cliatt Morris, she was educated in the McDuffie County schools, graduating from Thomson High School. Following graduation, she moved to Charlotte, N.C., where she worked for Western Union Telegraph Company, managing two different offices in downtown Charlotte. While living in Charlotte, she was a member of First Baptist Church, where she wed Russell Emmett Davenport, her husband for 68 years, until his death in 2004. They were married by Dr. Luther Little on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1935, in a noon service broadcast over WBT radio.
After marrying, Mrs. Davenport lived first in Wadesboro and then in Troy while her husband served the NC Agriculture Extension Service as County Farm Agent for Anson and Montgomery Counties. She moved to Fayetteville in 1945 when her husband became manager of Sycamore Dairy. Upon his later purchase of the dairy, she became an officer in the company.
A member since 1945 of Fayetteville’s First Baptist Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, circle leader, and loyal member of the Gleaners Class. She was also a former member of the Colonial Garden Club as well as a PTA volunteer in the schools her three children attended.
Mrs. Davenport is survived by two daughters, Berma Jean Davenport Kincaid and her husband J. Brandon Kincaid of Charlotte; Anne Davenport Godley and her husband C. Loyd Godley, Jr. of Goldsboro; and one son, Russell Emmett Davenport, Jr. and his wife Donna G. Davenport of Fayetteville.
Additional survivors include seven grandchildren: Caroline Kincaid Godfrey and husband Richard J. Godfrey, Katherine Kincaid Coley and husband Thomas M. Coley, Anna Godley Elliott and husband Matthew R. Elliott, David Loyd Godley and wife Carlin W. Godley, Russell Emmett Davenport III, Laura Alison Davenport and Charlotte Winifred Davenport; three step-grandchildren: Wilson Griffin Fowler, Caroline Franklin Fowler and Mary Maxton Fowler; two great-granddaughters: Sarah Catherine Godfrey and Grace Elizabeth Godfrey; a half-brother, Larry D. Morris; and a niece, Marian B. Mankin.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Davenport was predeceased by two sisters, Katherine Odessa Morris and Erin Morris Mills, and one brother, Cliatt Farris Morris.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Davenport’s devoted caregivers who made it possible for her, in her latter years, to continue living in the comfort of her home.
A funeral to celebrate the life of Berma Morris Davenport, conducted by the Reverend A. Edward Beddingfield, Jr., will be held at 11 a.m. on Sat., Jan. 12, 2013, at First Baptist Church, 201 Anderson Street, Fayetteville, N.C. 28301. Interment will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church prior to the service and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.
Laura L. Gay
Laura Lee Gay, 63, of Augusta, Ga., wife of the late Jackie Gay, entered into rest on Sat., Jan. 5, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wed., Jan. 9, at Starling Funeral Home in Harlem, Ga. Interment will be in Harlem Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Tue., Jan. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Starling Funeral Home.
Cullen L. Hicks
Bishop Cullen L. Hicks, 85, of Lincolnton, Ga., passed away on Tues., Jan. 8, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Fri., Jan. 11, at Martin's Crossroads Congregational Holiness Church & Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday & Thursday at the church.
Rees Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Samuel L. Story
Samuel Legrand Story, 79, of Thomson, Ga., died on Mon., Jan. 7, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 10, at Curtis Funeral Home. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 9, at the funeral home.
