• Fire departments number of calls declined in 2012
By Linda Green

City and county fire fighters responded to homes, business and emergencies on 2,234 occasions in 2012.
The Thomson Fire Department responded 1,026 times and McDuffie Fire Rescue Service answered 1,208 calls.
The calls for both departments for 2012 decreased from 2011. City personnel answered 967 fires and first responder calls in 2011 and the firefighters in the county answered 1276 calls in 2011.
County Assistant Fire Chief Stephen Sewell could not provide a reason for the decrease in the county’s calls but noted that the weather often plays a critical role in call fluctuations. “Weather affects the calls we receive,” he said.
