Firefighters throughout McDuffie County are mourning their New York comrades who were killed as they responded to a Christmas Eve fire.
“This is a terribly tragic event. It does not matter where it happened,” said Thomson Fire Chief Rick Sewell.
“We are a brotherhood and sisterhood of firefighters and anytime any one of us is injured by some random act of violence, it affects us no matter where we live,” he said.
A gunman, William Spengler, 62, ambushed firefighters on Monday, fatally shooting two of them as they arrived to battle a blaze in Webster, N.Y. Spengler set the fire, hid in a place with a clear view of the scene and started shooting when firefighters arrived. Eventually, the fires destroyed seven houses.
