• Dearing school zone may be expanded
By Wayne Parham

In it’s regular meeting earlier this month, the McDuffie County Board of Education approved a consent decree which documents steps the district will be taking towards coming out from under a desegregation lawsuit filed against 81 public school districts in 1969.
One major part of the consent degree is the board’s plan to create more racially- balanced elementary schools by expanding the Dearing Elementary School district in the 2013-2014 academic year.
Attorney Bob Knox Jr. briefed the board about the items contained in the consent decree. He also noted that the specifics of the consent decree may not be final.
