• Briarwood rally focuses on returning to democracy

While candidates across the US were campaigning and the public was participating in early voting, a government teacher and his students were striving to underscore the importance of being involved in the democratic process.
A political rally concerning the 2012 presidential election was held at Briarwood Academy Thursday afternoon. The rally, “Democracy in Action,” was an effort by students from the school’s American Government Class and teacher John Hammond.
“The trend I have noticed is that somewhere along the way we do not emphasize the democratic process, patriotism, the American way of life,” said Hammond, who has been involved in education for 53 years. He said complacency is the reason for the downturn.
