Saturday morning a group of Boy Scouts gathered around several fire barrels and disposed of more than 160 American flags.
“I saw a need in this community for a flag retirement ceremony because we have a lot of flags in Thomson and McDuffie County that need retiring,” said Aaron Donnelly, the aspiring Scout who organized the event as his Eagle Project. He collected the flags at several drop off points around town in preparation for the event.
The Scouts and a small crowd of spectators gathered behind the county fire station on Salem Road for the ceremony. Donnelly turned the event over to the master of ceremony, a fellow Scout who explained to the gathering what each part of the flag represents.
