The McDuffie County Health Department has issued a notice of a rabid fox found in McDuffie County.
On the morning of Aug. 27, the fox was seen acting in an “unusual manner” near Sweetwater Park off Wrens Highway. Witnesses reported that the animal did not seem to be fearful of people. The fox unsuccessfully attempted to attack a bystander and was killed.
The McDuffie County Health Department submitted the fox to the Georgia Public Health Lab for rabies testing. Positive rabies notification was received on Aug. 30.
The McDuffie County Health Department advises all citizens to have their pets vaccinated for rabies by a registered veterinarian. The Department also recommends that wild animals should be avoided. Any contact by people or pets with wild animals should be reported to the McDuffie County Health Department at (706) 595-1740.
