After Thomson’s 32-27 win over Evans, the Bulldogs opened their regular season Friday night in Waynesboro against the Burke County Bears.
The Bears, Class AAA State Champions, rose to Class AAAA with the off-season Georgia High School reclassification.
Game time against the Bears, who defeated Class A Warren County 40-7 in a scrimmage last Friday night, was 7:30 p.m.
Thomson cruised to a 9-0 start last year, before losing to the Bears in the region playoff and Henry County in the first round of the state playoffs.
With the reclassification, Thomson is in Region 3-AAA along with Dodge County, Jefferson County, Swainsboro and Washington County.
Milan Turner, head coach, said the team had a great summer of workouts.
“All of our players are in weight training every day,” said Turner, in his second season at the helm. “The administration has worked hard on scheduling to help us with that, as far as getting our athletes in the weight room. You can’t just lift weights a few days a week and see a great improvement.”
The coach said the team will need the extra conditioning as it prepares to face a monster schedule before region play begins against Swainsboro, Oct. 12.
