After nine years as principal and even more time as a coach, Clayton Parrish is adjusting to his new role as headmaster at Briarwood Academy.
The recent start of school marked the beginning of Parrish’s 17th year at Briarwood. He follows in the footsteps of John. T. Hammond, the sixth headmaster in the school’s history.
Parrish’s previous responsibilities at the school not only included his time as principal, but also a five-year stint as athletic director and many years as a coach.
He said Hammond knew about five years ago that retirement was on the horizon and started working to prepare him in the event that he might be named the next headmaster. The board officially hired Parrish as headmaster in December 2011, the pending change was made public in January, and his first official day was June 1.
