• ‘Big John’ Crawford dies in Augusta

The Thomson funeral director known as “Big John” Crawford died Wednesday.
John E. Crawford, Sr., 84, was a patient in the Charlie Norwood Veteran’s Hospital in Augusta, when he died.
Crawford was a veteran of the Korean War and was the founder of the Crawford Funeral Home, which opened on Cherokee Street in 1966. He ran the business until he retired in 1988. The business relocated to Washington Road and became Crawford Mortuary in 1996. He also operated Crawford Ambulance Service from 1970 to 1977.
