With the raising of the right hand and acknowledging obedience to the constitutions of Georgia and the United States, leaders of the City of Thomson were sworn into office for the next four years.
Probate Judge Valerie Burley performed the Jan. 20 ceremony in which the mayor and five city council members took the oath of office during a special called meeting.
Kenneth Usry was sworn into the office of mayor for the next four years. Alton Belton was sworn in as a council member and representative of District 2, Clifford “Bud” Lunceford was sworn-in as council representative of District 1A. Bernice Brown was sworn in to represent District 3 on the council. James “Jaye” Jones was sworn-in to represent District 1B. The Rev. John Smalley was sworn-in to represent District 2.
Following the ceremony, the council reaffirmed all of the decisions they made on Jan. 12 and Jan. 17. The step was necessary to make their action legal as officials of the city and community for the coming year, since they were not an official body when they voted on issues impacting the city.
