• Youngsters enjoy learning about different occupations

It was a time for safety and community helper exploration Thursday as youngsters in the Cornerstone Preschool at First Baptist Church in Thomson participated in the Community Helpers Program.
Debra McLarnon, Cornerstone director, said nearly 40 preschoolers heard presentations from from people in varied vocational fields.
Warrenton Police Sgt. Jamie Henning and his partner Roscoe, a multi-purpose K9 german shepherd, visited the children. Henning stressed to the youngsters how critical it is to behave and avoid illegal drugs. The children enjoyed taking turns petting Roscoe, who is trained in narcotic detection, tracking, and attack.
Explaining the duties of a nurse was Rhiannon Rayburn, RN, from Georgia Health Sciences University Hospital Medical Center Trauma Unit. She demonstrated a stethoscope and blood pressure monitor. She encouraged the children to make sure they were in restrained properly in vehicles and to make sure other family members were also.
